Laathi Movie Review

Vishal is back with an action drama Laatti. The movie gets good buzz with decent promotions. The flick hit screens today and let’s see how it will be.

Story :

Murali Krishna (Vishal) is a sincere police constable. For some reason, he gets suspended and rejoins the duty with the help of DIG Kamal (Prabhu). One day, Kamal asks for a favor to beat the hell out of Veera (Ramana), son of the don Sura (Sunny PN), who wants to plunge into politics. But, Veera decides to take revenge on Murali Krishna. What happened next and how Krishna dealt with them forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points :

This kind of role is a cakewalk for the actor Vishal. His performance as a sincere police constable who cares for society and family is impressive. He delivers his best and solely lifts the film. When it comes to fighting sequences, Vishal needs to be appreciated for his dedication. He is so intense in the action scenes.

Sunainaa gets a decent role and she justifies her character. The remaining actors are okay within their given roles. The kid Lirish Raghav is good in the given role. He performs well in the emotional scenes in the climax.

The story is simple and one can predict it easily. But, the way the debutant director A Vinoth Kumar runs the show is a bit engaging. He manages to make the film a decent one. As said in promotions, the last 40 minutes of the film are good to watch. Peter Hein gets all the credit for composing engrossing fight sequences.

Minus Points :

It looks like the director focuses only on Vishal’s character. He succeeds in writing good scenes for the protagonist but fails to write the rest of the part in an impressive manner. The protagonist will be highlighted only if the antagonist is cruel. This is where the director needs to focus more on. Scenes related to villains are unimpressive. Besides, the director takes a routine story and tries hard to narrate it engagingly.

On the other hand, the songs are unimpressive. The director could have made the music director Yuvan Shankar Raja compose fine tunes. However, the score of Yuvan is decent and it helps a lot to make action sequences intriguing.

The major point that needs to be discussed is the casting. The director should have roped in familiar faces for the villain roles. He creates suspense by not revealing the villain’s face until the interval. Unfortunately, the villain is less familiar to most of the audience and his performance is also normal.

Technical Aspects :

Director tries to narrate a routine cop drama in an engaging manner. Injecting several twists and turns could have made the film a better action drama. The score is okay and so is the cinematography. The fight sequences are captured in a manner that makes one feel the thrill. Production values are neat and the dubbing is also good.

Verdict :

On the whole, Laatti is a mediocre cop drama with an outdated plot and screenplay. Vishal is the only saviour of this film. The rest of the characters, especially the villain gang, are unimpressive. Those who don’t care about the story but love to watch a film just for some action sequences can watch the film this weekend.
